The place

Where South Phoenix starts and stops

There is no single line around South Phoenix, and the people who draw one do not agree. One common definition runs from the Salt River south to Baseline Road, between 51st Avenue and 48th Street. An early-childhood agency uses 27th Avenue to 48th Street, river to mountain. The Phoenix police precinct of the same name stretches all the way over South Mountain to take in Ahwatukee.

For this page we mean the city's South Mountain village and the streets around it: south of the river, down to the edge of South Mountain Park. Laveen, to the west, is its own village with its own page on bangautoglass.com, and Ahwatukee, over the mountain, has its own page on this site. We serve all three.

How it grew

Ranches, canals and flower fields

South Phoenix was farmland for most of a century, and the farm grid still shapes the lots. A few dates from its history:

Where we work

Acre lots and new streets

South Phoenix has both ends of the housing range, and each asks something a little different on install day.

  • On an older large lot, tell us where the car is parked if it is well back from the street or behind a gate, and whether there are dogs in the yard.
  • A firm, level spot is best. Soft dirt or loose gravel under the car is fine for parking but makes it harder to set a windshield, so a paved pad or a garage floor helps.
  • In the newer subdivisions along Baseline, send the gate code or call-box name and any vendor rules your association has sent you.
  • At a work lot or a yard, check that vendors may work there and pick a spot away from moving equipment.
  • From May to September, a carport, a garage or a morning slot keeps the glass from sitting in full sun.

We do not install in rain or blowing dust. If a storm is coming over the mountain, we call to move the time.

South Mountain Park

The mountain on your doorstep

South Mountain Park closes off the south side of the neighbourhood. At 16,283 acres it is the largest city-run park in the United States. The first 13,000 acres were sold to the city in 1924, under President Coolidge, for $17,000, and today it has 58 miles of trails and a lookout more than 1,000 feet above the desert floor. Dobbins Road runs just north of the park, and the Mystery Castle sits in its foothills.

Plenty of South Phoenix drivers use the park roads every week. If your windshield takes a stone or cracks on the way up, drive home rather than waiting at a trailhead. We will come to your house, and a driveway is a far better place to replace glass than a park lot.

Getting there

The roads across South Phoenix

  1. Baseline Road

The main east-west road at the south end, and the corridor where most of the new building has gone since the late 1990s.

  2. Southern Avenue and Broadway Road

The older east-west roads to the north, through the first ranch and farm subdivisions.

  3. Central Avenue and 24th Street

North-south links between downtown and the south side, across the Salt River.

  4. Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway

Opened on December 21, 2019. Its western segment runs down the 59th Avenue line through Laveen to I-10, and its eastern segment wraps around the south side of the mountain past Ahwatukee.

When you book, the nearest cross streets help the technician as much as the address does.

ZIP codes

South Phoenix ZIP codes

Three Phoenix ZIP codes cover most of South Phoenix. In the Census Bureau's 2020 ZIP code areas, 85040 centres near Broadway Road east of Central Avenue, 85041 lies west of Central between Southern Avenue and Baseline, and 85042 sits just south of Baseline toward the park.

Laveen's ZIP code is separate, and Ahwatukee has three of its own on the far side of the mountain. Give us the street address and we will take it from there.

South Phoenix questions

Ask us on our Phoenix line, (602) 782-5144, or by text at (877) 350-5962.

Is Laveen part of South Phoenix?

Laveen is a separate Phoenix urban village to the west, though some definitions of South Phoenix reach toward it. We serve Laveen as well; it has its own page on bangautoglass.com.

Can you replace my windshield on a big lot with a dirt driveway?

Usually, yes. Tell us where the car is parked and what the ground is like. A firm, level spot works best, so the garage or a paved pad is the first choice if you have one.

My car has a lane camera. Can it be calibrated at my house?

Yes, in most cases. If your windshield carries a lane or braking camera, its calibration comes with the replacement and happens during the same stop when it can be done on site. A paved, level pad makes that easier than dirt. If your car needs another setup, we say so up front.

A storm is building over South Mountain on my install day. What happens?

We do not install in rain or blowing dust, so we call you to move the time. If the sky clears, ask about a later slot: same-day appointments are available in most areas, depending on the glass your car needs and the rest of the day's schedule.
