What it is

Why the camera needs resetting

The camera behind your mirror reads lane lines, signs and the car ahead. It is aimed through one small patch of glass. A new windshield moves that patch by a fraction of a degree, and at freeway distance a fraction of a degree is a lane. Calibration teaches the camera where straight ahead is again.

We calibrate to the vehicle maker's specifications. On most cars it happens right after the glass is set, as part of the same appointment. When a vehicle's procedure needs equipment or a road drive we cannot do where it is parked, we tell you before booking, so there is no surprise on the day.

Systems

Features that read the road through the glass

  • Lane

    Lane-keep and lane departure

Steers or warns you back between the lines on I-17 and the Loops.

  • Braking

    Automatic emergency braking

Watches for stopped traffic, which matters in a Valley rush hour.

  • Cruise

    Adaptive cruise control

Some systems pair the camera with radar to keep a gap to the car ahead.

  • Lights

Auto high beams and sign reading

Dims for oncoming headlights and reads speed limit signs.

On the day

How calibration fits the appointment

  1. Before booking

We check from your VIN whether your car has a forward camera and which procedure the maker sets for it.

  2. During the install

The camera bracket comes with the new glass, and the camera is moved across and seated.

  3. After the glass is set

The technician runs the calibration the maker specifies for your vehicle.

  4. Before you drive

You hear the safe-to-drive time and what was done, and any warning light should be off.

Calibration is included with the windshield replacement when your vehicle needs it.

What you hear from us

Four things we tell you about your camera

Arizona sets out what a glass shop owes a driver when a windshield sits in front of a driver-assist camera. The statute is quoted on our Arizona insurance page; in practice, a Phoenix customer hears these four things from us.

  • Whether your camera needs calibrating after the new windshield, decided from your VIN and the maker's procedure.
  • An itemized description of the work before it starts: the glass, the calibration and anything else on the job.
  • That the calibration meets or exceeds the maker's specifications once it is done.
  • If a calibration cannot be completed where the car is parked, we tell you and your insurer in writing and point you to a dealer or another qualified facility.

Phoenix conditions

Heat, glare and a dusty lens

A forward camera works through the same glass you do. Monsoon dust that dries on the outside of the windshield, or a film from a dash that has cooked all summer on the inside, can blur its view and switch lane-keep off with a warning. Clean both sides of the glass in front of the mirror before you decide something is broken.

Low sun is the other Phoenix problem. Driving east on I-10 or Loop 202 at sunrise, or west on Camelback at sunset, many cameras pause their assist features until the glare passes. That is normal. A warning that stays on after the glare has gone, or one that started right after a windshield install, is a reason to call us on (602) 782-5144.

Calibration questions in Phoenix

Ask about your car on our Phoenix line, (602) 782-5144.

How do I know if my car has a camera behind the windshield?

Look behind the rearview mirror from outside the car. A black housing with a lens, often with a dotted border on the glass around it, is the camera. If you are unsure, send the VIN by text to (877) 350-5962 and we will check.

Can I skip calibration to save time?

We do not recommend it. A camera that is off by a little can steer or brake at the wrong moment, and a warning light may not tell you. The maker's procedure is what we follow.

Does calibration change the price?

Calibration is included with the windshield replacement when your vehicle needs it, and your quote covers both.

What if a warning light comes on after the install?

Call our Phoenix line, (602) 782-5144. If it is related to our work, our lifetime workmanship warranty covers it for as long as you own the vehicle.
